Parents and patients ask us a lot of the same questions before they start orthodontic treatment, and they are good questions. Below are plain answers on timing, cost, comfort and what happens after braces. Orthodontic care at Sunshine Smiles is provided by our two orthodontists, Dr. Christopher Trockel and Dr. Martin Trockel. If your question is not here, ask us at your free consultation.
When Should My Child First See an Orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic checkup by age 7. At that age most children have a mix of baby and adult teeth, which lets an orthodontist spot jaw growth problems, overbites, underbites, crossbites, crowding, spacing and habits such as thumb-sucking early.
An early visit does not mean early braces. Often we simply monitor growth and step in at the right time. When early treatment (Phase One) is needed, it helps guide jaw growth and make room for permanent teeth, and it can make later treatment simpler. Our braces for kids page lists the signs to watch for at home.
Am I Too Old for Braces?
No. Adults start orthodontic treatment for many reasons: some never had braces as children, and others have noticed their teeth shift over the years. Adults often choose ceramic or champagne braces or clear aligners for a lower-profile look. Straighter teeth are also easier to brush and floss, which supports healthier gums. If dental visits make you nervous, our practice also offers sedation options and a judgment-free space to ask questions.
What Is the Difference Between a Dentist and an Orthodontist?
Every orthodontist starts out as a dentist and then completes additional specialty training focused on moving teeth and guiding jaw development. At Sunshine Smiles, both care paths are under one roof:
| Our doctor | Role | Training highlights from their bios |
|---|---|---|
| Dr. Christopher Trockel, DDS, MS | Orthodontist | Dental school at the State University of New York at Buffalo (top of his class, 2011); orthodontic residency at Nova Southeastern University (2013); AAO member |
| Dr. Martin Trockel, DDS, MS | Orthodontist | Dental school at UCSF; Master of Science and orthodontic specialty certificate from Nova Southeastern University (2015); AAO member |
| Dr. Priscila Jelsing, DDS | Dentist | Dental training in Brazil; taught dental students at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry for two years |
That means a family can keep up with cleanings and checkups and see an orthodontist at the same office. You can read more on our meet our doctors page.
What Happens at the First Orthodontic Visit?
Your first orthodontic visit is a free consultation. We review your dental and medical history, take digital X-rays and a 3D scan (no messy impressions), and one of our orthodontists completes an exam. Then we explain what we see, which treatment options fit, and what the plan would cost. There is plenty of time for questions. Our patient resources page covers this visit in more detail.
Can Treatment Start the Same Day?
Often, yes. We offer same-day consultations and treatment starts, so if you are ready and the plan is clear, you may not have to wait weeks to begin. Some cases need more planning first, and your orthodontist will tell you if that applies to you.
How Long Does Orthodontic Treatment Take?
It depends on how much the teeth and bite need to move. For teens in braces, treatment commonly runs about 18 to 24 months. Mild cases can be shorter and complex bites can take longer. Your orthodontist will give you an estimate for your own case at the consultation. Wearing rubber bands as directed and keeping your appointments are two of the biggest things you can do to stay on schedule. Our team coaches teens on both.
Do Braces Hurt?
Getting braces put on is not painful. Most people feel some pressure and mild soreness for a few days after braces go on and after adjustments, and it fades as the mouth adjusts. Soft foods and the comfort tips our team gives you help during those first days.
Which Is Better: Braces or Clear Aligners?
Neither is better for everyone. Braces are fixed in place and work for a wide range of cases. We offer metal, ceramic and champagne braces, and you can compare them on our braces page. Clear aligners are removable and nearly invisible, but they have to be worn most of the day to work. We offer several aligner systems, including Invisalign, Spark and SureSmile. Your orthodontist will tell you which options suit your bite.
Can I Play Sports or an Instrument With Braces?
Yes. For contact sports we recommend a custom mouthguard for added protection. Musicians usually need a short adjustment period, and most teens go back to playing normally. Our braces for teens page has more on school, sports and activities.
How Much Does Orthodontic Treatment Cost, and Does Insurance Help?
Cost depends on the type of treatment and the complexity of the case, so we give you a clear estimate at your free consultation instead of a general price. We offer low down payments and flexible payment plans. Our team will review your insurance coverage and file claims for you. Many plans cover part of orthodontic treatment, and we will help you get the most from your benefits.
Do I Have to Visit the Office for Every Check-In?
Not always. Along with in-person appointments, we offer smile monitoring with virtual check-ins that can make treatment more convenient for busy families. We also offer flexible scheduling and text reminders to help appointments fit around school and work.
What Happens After Braces Come Off?
You move into retainers. Teeth naturally tend to drift after treatment, and wearing a retainer as directed protects your result. Your orthodontist will explain how and when to wear yours, and retainer follow-up is part of the orthodontic care we provide.
Is Orthodontics Only About Straight Teeth?
No. Orthodontic care can also help with bite problems that affect chewing, jaw discomfort, and, for some patients, breathing and sleep. Our airway orthodontics page explains signs such as chronic mouth breathing and snoring in children.
Where Are You Located, and Do You Speak Spanish?
Our Broken Arrow office is at 427 W Stone Wood Dr #427, Broken Arrow, OK 74012. We also see families from Tulsa, Bixby, Coweta and Leonard. We have Spanish-speaking staff, and our Español page gives an overview in Spanish.
